THE JUDGES

JANOS ZOLTAN

Filmmaker / Co-Founder of INSPIREFLIX

Janos has been attracted to the magic of motion-picture from his early childhood. He did eventually become a producer at the Hungarian Public TV and created documentaries till his emigration to Australia. He first joined SBS Radio in Melbourne, where he worked for the Hungarian Program as a producer. Having completed a Master's Degree at the Victorian College of the Arts, he received the Documentary Best Production and the Overall Best Production Awards in 2015. In recent years, Janos has devoted his life as a documentary filmmaker to INSPIREFLIX, where he delivers incredible human stories just as he dreamt of during his childhood.

GABOR KUKUCSKA

Filmmaker / Founder of INSPIREFLIX

Gabor is a creative filmmaker, driven entrepreneur, and a tech-savvy visionary.  He simply loves shooting people (pun intended). He has produced, directed, and filmed myriads of TV and Youtube commercials, corporate and music videos, and short documentary films.

IVAN GAAL

Filmmaker / Member of the Board

Ivan Gaal arrived in Australia in 1957 at the age of 18. On the ship's passenger list he was listed plainly as a 'factory worker’. While working in the factory, he managed to win an Australian Championship and Olympic selection for the Rome Olympics in a C-2 Canadian canoe. Photography became a way to express himself in an alien culture. Super 8 mm films followed before he became a filmmaker with the Education Department of Victoria while completing his diploma with the Victorian College of the Arts. He saw the overly commercialized Australian media and society differently from the local filmmakers. Despite all that, his films still managed to inspire, educate, and entertain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of films can I see on CineMigrant?

A: Great question! We only showcase independent short films that are created by emigrants. (director, cinematographer, etc.) In terms of the genre, we are open to all motion pictures under 50 minutes in length.

Q: Where can I watch the films?

A: Once you've registered, you can join the live streams once a month at our Stream Theatre -> streatre at https://cinemigrant.com/streathre/ this is also where the Q&A will take place.

Q: What are the screening dates and times?

A: Since CineMigrant is a monthly online film festival, the films are shown three times. We stream first on the last Thursday of every month starting at 8:30pm AEST, then repeat the stream at 5:30am AEST the next day, and one last time 9 hours after that at 1:30pm.

Q: How does the selection process work?

A: Every month the judges select the Top5 films from all the submissions to date. You can see the judges above.

Q: What is the Q&A is about?

A: During the festival, viewers can submit questions that will provide some of the talking points. We're also very interested to know about the filmmaker's personal story, what is it like to be an immigrant filmmaker in their chosen home.

Q: Why are the films only available during the live stream?

A: As you may know, the majority of filmmakers and production houses like to submit their work to various film festivals, most of which forbids them to have the film freely available online. It is the only way festivals can sell enough tickets to keep the lights on, by making sure their target audience isn't able to watch the selected films anywhere else but their event. For this reason, most filmmakers avoid sharing their work online on an open platform before the planned festival run is finished. We need to make sure that the films are protected, and that our event is not considered an online public release by other festivals, but rather an exclusive screening to a limited closed audience.

OUR STORY

June 2019 - Australian Films Hungarian Spirits

The original idea was dreamed up by our very own Janos Zoltan who has managed to unite a bunch of very independent, Hungarian filmmakers that live and work in Australia. After months and months of planning and organising, sprinkled with plenty of heated discussions, the final lineup with all its content was ready to shine. On 13th and 14th of June 2019 in the heart of Budapest at the cozy Art+ Cinema theatre, the first films were screened, loved, appreciated, and analyzed by a lovely and receptive audience. The wheel of CineMigrant was pushed into motion.

Sept 2019 - The birth of CineMigrants

After the successful first-ever event in Budapest, we have agreed that we've definitely stumbled onto something that people find interesting. So we had the idea to establish similar events in other countries, which then quickly got changed into an online streaming event by the 'RONA' (COVID-19).

June 2020 - World Premier

From the 25th of June 2020, every month the judges of CineMigrants will select the Top5 films from the submissions of emigrant filmmakers from around the world, and screen them in the online "Streaming Theatre", our very own "Streatre". We'll also host a Q&A podcast featuring the filmmakers of the Top5 films as part of our online festival, where we'll ask questions submitted by the audience as well as dig deep into what makes the selected creators tick.
